Zoom Netcraft has greatly increased the number of surveyed sites over the last year

Netcraft has published its latest survey of public web servers. The number of sites queried has more than doubled since April 2011, with the number of responses from sites having increased from 312 million to nearly 677 million web sites across the internet year over year.

According to the latest report, Apache increased its market share to 65% with the largest overall growth since March. The second largest growing web server software is nginx, which now holds roughly 10% of the market. Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS) lost 0.15% but still has the second biggest deployment base at 14%.

Looking at the one million busiest sites on the internet, the ranking of the three most dominant server platforms is the same except that, on these sites, Apache has lost 0.31% market share mostly in favour of nginx. Microsoft's IIS has also gained slightly in this arena. Across active sites, nginx had overtaken IIS in January and is still holding onto second place even though Microsoft's web server has managed to regain some ground.
