Oracle's NetBeans developers have released a beta of version 7.3 of the NetBeans IDE which features the first appearance of Project Easel, the IDE's new HTML5 Application Development environment. Easel offers an HTML5 project type with a much improved JavaScript editor, which has enhanced code completion, and JavaScript testing support, along with a page inspector and visual CSS style editor. A JavaScript debugger, embedded WebKit browser and Chrome integration via a Chrome extension complete the extensive package of enhanced tools. A videoDirect download(46 MB and 7 mins 24 secs) presents the new HTML5 features in NetBeans 7.3, including the new project wizard which lets users select initial templates and specific versions of JavaScript libraries to be downloaded from content delivery networks.

Java developers are not left out though, with improvements such as a new-style breadcrumb navigation bar, new member and hierarchy views, updated hints and refactorings, filtering for "Find Usages" and an "effective" POM editor tab for pom.xml files. Java EE developers will find a JPQL testing tool and enhancements to the REST service development features. FXML and the SceneBuilder are better supported in 7.3 Beta's JavaFX handling, which is also compatible with JDK 7u6 on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Groovy developers will find support for Groovy 2.0, Java EE project and Groovy JUnit test support, and an implementation of basic refactoring, while PHP developers will find new parsers for annotations (such as in Symfony 2 and Doctrine 2), basic integration for the Composer dependency manager, Twig code completion, matching for related tags and errors from unmatched tags. The profiler now supports sampling memory, comparing snapshots, and works on Linux ARM systems – the C/C++ support is more memory efficient and parses faster.

Finally, the NetBeans platform itself has filterable options dialogs, new File/Open Recent File menus and shortcuts, and the overflow of the toolbar is handled better. More details about these features are included in the NetBeans 7.3 New and Noteworthy wiki page. NetBeans 7.3 Beta is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris and is dual licensed under the CDDL 1.0 and GPLv2. As with all development releases, it is not recommended to use the software in production, but the NetBeans developers say that if users do use it with their production code, they should ensure that the code and changes are backed up.
