The developers of NeoOffice, the Macintosh port of OpenOffice, have released version 2.2.4, which has the same level of functionality as OpenOffice 2.1. NeoOffice uses some native Mac OS user interface features, in contrast to the official port which is currently an X11 application.

The new version adds support for Open XML format Word, Excel and PowerPoint files created in the current Windows and Mac versions of Microsoft Office. In addition, the developer claim Calc can execute nearly all VBA macros, a task which Excel can no longer handle in the current Office:mac 2008 version – Microsoft only plans to reintroduce VBA support with the next version of the office suite.

The development of version 3.0 of OpenOffice, which is also to be released as a native Mac OS Aqua application, is in progress. A beta version for the Mac OS X is currently available for download and a second pre-release version is expected at the start of July. The final version is scheduled for release in September.
