The NeoOffice developers have announced the release of version 3.0 of NeoOffice for Mac OS X. NeoOffice 3.0 is a free open source office suite based on OpenOffice.org version 3.0.1 and includes many of the most commonly used features in Microsoft Office.

However, according to a forum post by developer 'pluby', the 3.0 release is missing the Mac OS X Universal Access support from OpenOffice.org. Users that require Universal Access support are therefore advised to use an alternative office suite until the feature is added.

Performance improvements have been made to the OpenOffice.org code to speed up the NeoOffice suite. The new version includes several features that are not included in version 3.0.1 of OpenOffice, such as Mac OS X Services support, Native floating tool windows, Media Browser support and the ability to import images from scanners and cameras. Mac OS X Leopard grammar checking support is also included for Mac OS X 10.5 users. Currently, however, the Mac OS X grammar checker only supports English.

NeoOffice is available to download for Mac OS X 10.4 or higher and supports Intel or PowerPC based Macs. Users that find any bugs are requested to report them to the developers in the NeoOffice Support forum. NeoOffice is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and is funded entirely by donations.
