The NeoOffice developers have announced the release of version 3.0.1 of NeoOffice for Mac OS X. NeoOffice 3.0.1 is a free open source office suite based on OpenOffice.org version 3.0.1 and includes many of the most commonly used features in Microsoft Office. The suite is one of the most stable office suites for Mac OS X and shows significant speed improvements compared to OpenOffice.

The NeoOffice 3.0 update adds a number of new features, including Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (32-bit version only) support and native file locking support for local and networked volumes. The addition of NeoOffice Mobile lets users securely share NeoOffice files with other users and computers. According to the developers, it does so by allowing users to "publish" a document "from within NeoOffice to the NeoOffice Mobile server using a secure, encrypted connection".

Once the documents are published to the server, they can be viewed using a standard web browser or web-enabled mobile device, such as the iPhone. NeoOffice Mobile accounts are free, include 10 MB of storage and documents expire after 48 hours. Extra features, including additional storage and extended expiration dates, are available for NeoOffice donors. More details can be found on the feature comparison page.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes. NeoOffice 3.0.1 is available to download for Mac OS X 10.4 or higher. NeoOffice is released under version 3 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv3) and is funded entirely by donations. A detailed comparison between NeoOffice 3.0, Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac and OpenOffice 3.0.1 is available on the NeoOffice Wiki.
