At OSCON, Chris C. Kemp, the former CTO of NASA, announced the formation of a new company, Nebula. The announcement press releasePDF said that the new company would produce an OpenStack hardware appliance for cloud computing that, in addition to supporting commodity servers such as the reference implementation on Dell PowerEdge C servers, would support Facebook's OpenCompute standards. The company will also be developing software for OpenStack to support enterprise-grade petabyte-scale storage systems.

The Nebula team consists of Steve O'Hara and Devin Carlen – co-founders described as OpenStack pioneers – and several engineers and executives that were formerly with Google, NASA, Amazon, Disney, Dell, Anso Labs, Rackspace and Microsoft. The privately-owned company has secured venture capital funding from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Highland Capital Partners.

The press release says that "Nebula has developed a hardware appliance that allows any business to easily build a massive private computing cloud from hundreds or thousands of inexpensive computers". The company is named after the original NASA cloud system that Kemp started at the NASA Ames Research Center. The technology of Nebula became part of OpenStack when it was launched jointly by RackSpace and NASA just over a year ago.
