CouchDB logo The Apache CouchDB developers have announced CouchDB 1.1.0, now with native SSL support. This is the first stable release of CouchDB with SSL support. Other enhancements in the release include support for HTTP range requests for attachments, support for TCP_NODELAY, wildcards in vhost definitions and a more flexible URL rewriter. The release also features "multiple micro-optimizations" to improve performance when reading data. Futon, the administration front end, now supports the ability to change password, rather than requiring users to edit a file on the server system.

Version 1.0 of the document-oriented database was released in July 2010 and has since found its way onto Android devices and the iPhone and iPad. Its ability to resynchronise databases between multiple instances has made it useful for mobile applications and client applications such as UbuntuOne, where it handles file metadata. CouchDB instances are accessible through a JSON returning RESTful API which can be called from JavaScript running in a web browser; a number of third party client libraries exist to make accessing the database even easier. CouchDB is written in Erlang, a language designed for building scalable concurrent distributed systems.

CouchDB 1.1.0 is available to download and is licensed under the Apache licence 2.0.
