The developers behind Icinga, which forked from Nagios two-and-a-half years ago, have released version 1.6 of the network monitoring software. This was quickly followed by version 1.6.1 released in response to a bug. Major changes in the new version include extended logging capabilities in the Classic UI and Core designed to make troubleshooting easier and increasing the performance of notifications. The developers have also added the ability to assign expiry times to acknowledgement, making use of an idea from a recent feedback poll.

The IDOUtils module gains an optional extension for SLAs (Service Level Agreements), which is able, for example, to distinguish between critical events from planned and unplanned downtimes and acknowledgement periods. This data is then stored in the database for later analysis and can be accessed via the web interface. Further enhancements, with the aim of providing comprehensive SLA reporting in the future, are planned. This function is, however, currently flagged as a preliminary version, as is the new 'Tackle cronk'; this allows the Icinga web interface to give a more rapid overview of a monitored object. For a system, for example, it displays information on the services running on that system, contacts, host groups, SLA information and so on.

Icinga 1.6.1 is available to download from the project's Sourceforge page and is licensed under the GPLv2.
