MySQL vice president Kaj Arnö writes in his blog that the long awaited version 5.1 of the free MySQL database is ready. Presently, source code for MySQL 5.1.30 – general availability, as well as binaries for AIX, FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, and others are being distributed to download mirrors – packets are already available on some of them.

MySQL 5.1 packs a host of updates, including table partitioning, expanded replication functions, and support for processing XML files. An article on heise Open provides a detailed description of the updates.
