Mozilla's Thunderbird reaches version 10.0

Mozilla has announced the arrival of version 10.0 of its open source Thunderbird news and email client. Based on the new Gecko 10 rendering engine, the update includes email search improvements and adds support for searching the web.

Users can now search using, for example, Google, Bing, Twitter and Wikipedia from within Thunderbird; the search results will be displayed in a new Thunderbird tab. Other changes include fixes for problems when drafting emails and platform bugs, as well as seven security holes, five of which are rated as critical by Mozilla.

Thunderbird users can now search the web from the built-in search bar The Thunderbird developers have also published a security and stability update, version 3.1.18, for the 3.1.x legacy branch that addresses five security issues, four of which are considered to be critical. The development team notes that Thunderbird 3.1.18 will no longer be supported from 24 April 2012 and advise all users to upgrade to the current stable release.

Thunderbird 10.0 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux from the project's site. Existing users can either upgrade using the built-in update tool or wait for the automatic update notification.

Thunderbird binaries are released under the Mozilla Thunderbird End-User Software License Agreement and the source code is released under disjunctive tri-licensing that includes the Mozilla Public License, GPLv2 and LGPLv2.1.
