Zoom Mozilla's Plugin Check now supports other browsers, including Chrome 4.
Mozilla has announced that it has updated its Plugin Check service, adding support for other browsers. According to a post on the Mozilla Security blog by Johnathan Nightingale, Director of Firefox Development, the developers have expanded the service so that the latest version of Plugin Check now supports Safari 4, Chrome 4 and Opera 10.5 in addition to Mozilla's own Firefox web browser. Nightingale says that basic support for Internet Explorer 7 and 8 has also been added "for the most popular plug-ins, as well, but since IE requires specific code to be written for each plug-in it will take us a little longer to get to full coverage."

By simply visiting the Plugin Check service site, users can make sure they have the latest version of a number of plug-ins, such as Adobe's Flash Player or Java. If a newer version is available, the service will recommend an update. The service is intended to guard against security holes by helping to keep browser plug-ins up to date.

The developers say that they consider the plug-in directory to be at an alpha stage of development and are seeking help from plug-in vendors. Vendors are asked to email the development team at plugindir@mozilla.com for more information on how to get involved and site operators can "spread the word" about the service with the new site badges.
