Thunderbird Logo The Mozilla developers have announced the availability of the first alpha for version 3.1 of their popular open source Thunderbird email and news client, code named "Lanikai". The preview release is based on the Gecko 1.9.2 platform and includes a number of improvements and bug fixes.

According to the developers, one of the main goals for the Thunderbird 3.1 Alpha 1 release is "to find out about possible problems caused by the changes in the underlying platform". The first alpha features several stability and memory improvements, IMAP updates, interface design changes and corrections, and fixes for Smart Folders, message filters, and attachment handling. Additionally, the Download Manager is now available as a menu item under Tools>Saved Files. The developers also note that, as with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

More details about the release, including a list of known issues, can be found in the release notes. Thunderbird 3.1 Alpha 1 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Thunderbird binaries are released under the Mozilla Thunderbird End-User Software License Agreement and the source code is released under disjunctive tri-licensing that includes the Mozilla Public Licence, GPLv2 and LGPLv2.1. The latest stable release of Thunderbird is version 3.0.1 from mid-January.
