Almost 18 months after the release of version 0.9, the Mozilla Calendar Project developers have announced the availability of the first beta for version 1.0 of their standalone Sunbird calendar application. The beta includes nearly 500 bug fixes and improvements over the previous release.

Sunbird 1.0 Beta 1 now allows users to define multiple alarms for a single event and includes improvements to interoperability with various CalDAV servers. Application stability, performance and memory consumption have also been improved. The developers also note that, as previously announced, this will be the last and final public release of Sunbird from the Calendar Project. According to developer Simon Paquet, the team will now focus their efforts exclusively on the Lightning calendar add-on for version 3 of the Thunderbird email client and the SeaMonkey internet application suite.

More details about the release, including a list of known issues, can be found in the release notes and change log. Sunbird 1.0 Beta 1 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Sunbird is released under Mozilla's disjunctive tri-license that includes the Mozilla Public Licence, GPLv2 and LGPLv2.1.
