The first beta of Mozilla's Fennec mobile web browser has been released for Nokia's N810 Internet Tablets running OS2008 ("Maemo"). The beta is the twelfth development milestone and is intended to get feedback from users, testers and Web developers. The Fennec team also want to encourage add-on developers to port their existing add-ons and create new ones for the mobile browser.

Elements from Fennec's desktop counterpart Firefox are also included. Fennec includes the "awesome bar" (Smart URL bar), support for third party add-ons and of course tab browsing, which uses thumbnail images. The new JavaScript engine, TraceMonkey, is included in the beta which, according to Mozilla, greatly improves its performance. Other enhancements have been made in the release to improve performance with regards to start-up time and user interface interaction, including panning, zooming and overall responsiveness.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes. Fennec beta 1 is available for download now for the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet running OS2008. Alternatively users can also install a version of Fennec to try on their PC's under Windows, Mac OS X or Linux.
