JetPack Logo The Mozilla Labs developers have announced Jetpack SDK 0.7, the latest revision of the HTML/CSS/JavaScript based extension system for Firefox. The new release includes a panel API, which allows developers to float popup windows over web content, a clipboard API to give extensions access to the system clipboard and a notifications API which allows extensions to get the users attention with toaster or Growl-style messages.

The clipboard API, as an example, allows an extension developer to not be subject to the restrictions which, for security reasons, are normally applied to JavaScript interactions with the clipboard. This makes extensions that copy their results to the clipboard, ready for pasting into another window or applications, easier to write. The notifications API will allow developers to inform users of status changes in their extensions on the desktop, rather than within the confines of the browser window, and the panel API will allow for lightboxes, preference controls and other modal dialogs that block the currently viewed page to be simply implemented.

The release notes also highlight improvements to the documentation which now detail previously undocumented APIs and have a consistent visual style. To aid in the creation of future documentation, a walkthrough details the steps needed to create high quality Jetpack documentation. Jetpack 0.7 SDK is available to download (direct download) and installation instructions are available. Developers need Python 2.5 or later and version 3.6 or later of the Firefox web browser to make use of the MPL licensed SDK.
