The Mozilla Foundation's reported revenues for 2008 were $78.6 million, up approximately 5 per cent from 2007 revenues of $75.1 million. In a post on her blog, Mozilla Chairman Mitchell Baker said that, despite the financial crisis of 2008, "Mozilla remains strong financially".

As in previous years, the majority of the 2008 revenue was generated from the built-in search functionality in Firefox from various organisations, including Google. Mozilla receives money for featuring Google as in its default home page and search bar. The deal was originally set to expire in 2008, but was extended to 2011.

According to Baker, the 2008 revenues included a loss of $7.8 million, approximately 25 per cent, in investments in the Foundation's long-term portfolio "as a result of economic conditions and investment values at the end of 2008". Expenses for the foundation and its subsidiaries for 2008 came in at $49.4 million, up 48 per cent from 2007 expenses of $33.3 million. "Expenditures remain highly focused in two key areas: people and infrastructure", said Baker.

Firefox use is also on the rise. The number of people using the Firefox web browser on a daily basis has increased from 28 million in 2006 to 49 million in 2007 to 75 million daily users in 2008. According to Baker, "as of November 2009 the daily number has grown to 110 million, bringing the total number of users to approximately 330 million people". Firefox's global market share, as of November 2009, is 25 per cent .

The Mozilla Foundation has posted its 2008 audited financial statmentsPDF and IRS tax formPDF on its web site. The foundation has also posted a 2008 Financial FAQ page.
