Mozilla Logo Six years ago on the 9th of November, 2004, Mozilla released version 1.0 of its open source Firefox web browser. The latest versions of Firefox are now available in more than 70 languages and are used by nearly 25% of internet users. Established more than 10 years ago, the Mozilla Foundation is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to "promote openness, innovation and opportunity on the Web".

To celebrate the browser's sixth birthday, Mozilla and the community are asking users to "showcase how people love and use Firefox" in their part of the world. Users can send send a postcard to Mozilla with a message about Firefox to be featured in either their Mountain View, California or Paris offices with an opportunity for some cards to win "Firefox goodies". More details about the FoxCards postcards can be found on the Firefox Facebook page or on the Spread Firefox portal.

The next major update to Firefox, version 4, is Mozilla's next-generation web browser based on version 2.0 of the Gecko rendering platform – the Firefox 3.6 branch uses Gecko 1.9.2 – and features a new Add-ons Manager and extension management API. Originally expected to arrive by the end of this year, the organisation says that the major update to the browser will shift to release candidate status sometime in "early 2011".

The latest stable release of Firefox is version 3.6.12, a security update that addressed a critical vulnerability, while the latest development preview is Firefox 4 Beta 6 from the 14th of September. A final release date for Firefox 4, however, has yet to be announced.
