Mozilla announces Open Badges Beta

Mozilla's Open Badges project has moved into beta, widening access to the company's plans to use the digital tokens to "supercharge learning and identity" by making it simpler to "show what you know". The company has announced the public beta for Open Badges which has now been integrated with the Mozilla Persona identity system, previously BrowserID.
First announced late last year, Open Badges is Mozilla's skill and achievement recognition system which can be used by "any organisation or learning community to issue, earn and display badges across the web". Since its introduction, other organisations have partnered with Mozilla for Open Badges, such as the MacArthur Foundation, and new collaborators including NASA, Intel, Disney-Pixar and 4H have collaborated with the project.
The public beta of the Open Badges project also adds a number of new features. A new badge displayer API should, the developers say, "make it easier to display digital badges across the web, from personal web sites to social networking platforms". Other changes include an updated badge issuer API, new documentation, new privacy features and an updated privacy policy. Improvements have also been made to the "Badge Backpack" service for storing, managing, importing and grouping badges earned by users.
Further information about the beta can be found on the MozillaWiki and in a blog post by Erin Knight, Mozilla's Senior Director of Learning. Hosted on GitHub, source code for Open Badges is licensed under version 2.0 of the Mozilla Public License.
