Mozilla Labs has announced that it has released an update to its F1 link-sharing add-on for Firefox. The update has a new UI, more service specific features and supports a greater variety of services.

With the new UI, the horizontal layout of the previous version has now been changed to a vertical layout; this allows the addition of more service specific functions and keeps text to a more readable line length. Twitter and Facebook capabilities have been expanded – direct messages can be sent to Twitter followers and on Facebook there is direct sharing to a group wall. LinkedIn! sharing is now supported and there is an improved template for GMail.

The new F1 release drops support for Firefox 3.6; prospective users need to be running the Firefox 4 beta, as F1 now uses technology that is only properly supported in Firefox 4. A demonstration video of the new add-on can be found at f1.mozillamessaging.com along with a link to download Firefox 4 beta. Version 0.7.5 of F1 is available to download from the add-ons for Firefox page. Source code for the add-on is hosted on GitHub, and the Mozilla developers invite feedback via the discussion forum.

The Mozilla Labs developers first announced F1 in November 2010. The add-on is designed to help users share links across a variety of social networks and services. Mozilla Messaging User Experience Designer Bryan Clark said at the time that this Mozilla experiment was intended to make sharing both "easy and clutter free" by simplifying the process and removing as many steps as possible.

The F1 source code is released iunder the terms of the Mozilla Public License Version 1.1.
