Mozilla Evangelist questions JavaScript benchmarks

John Resig, Mozilla's JavaScript evangelist and lead developer on JQuery, has questioned the quality of the benchmarks used to measure that performance. The performance of JavaScript engines inside browsers is becoming a competitive issue, Resig comes to the conclusion that the benchmarks are not adapting well to the rapid increase in performance.

In a posting on his blog, Resig has looked at the three major benchmark suites, Webkit's SunSpider, Mozilla's Dromaeo and Google's V8 Benchmark. Because there has been a rapid jump in JavaScript performance, what were tests which took a reasonable amount of time to run have become moderate or even fast tests. This means that test measurements are becoming more error prone, having been created with assumptions about performance built in. Resig proposes a new testing framework for benchmarking and is setting out to prototype this in a future version of Dromaeo.
