Motorola to start rolling out Froyo update to European Milestones

Motorola Milestone In a post on its Facebook page, Motorola has confirmed that, from next week, it will start user trials of an over-the-air (OTA) upgrade for its European Milestone smartphones that will upgrade the onboard version of Google's open source Android mobile operating system to version 2.2, code named "Froyo". The company says that, once the trails are completed, it will go into the approval stage and a roll out to all users is expected by the end of the year.

A number of other Android devices have already received the latest 2.2 update, including Google's Nexus One smartphone, the HTC Desire and the HTC EVO 4G. In the US, the Droid, as the Milestone is known on CDMA carrier Verizon, received its 2.2 update in mid-August.

However, it's likely that older devices, such as the HTC Dream (also known the T-Mobile G1 – the first ever Android phone) and the HTC Magic (AKA the T-Mobile myTouch 3G), will never get an official upgrade to Froyo. Users of those devices can, alternatively, install custom Android firmware like CyanogenMod 6.0 to get many of the features that Android 2.2 includes.
