Apache TomEE

The 1.5 release of Apache TomEE (pronounced "Tommy") adds a JAX-RS (JAX for RESTful Web Services) distribution to the Apache Tomcat variant. TomEE extends the popular Servlet Container with Java EE 6 (Java Platform, Enterprise Edition) features. Unlike the Full Profile, this certification only offers the technologies that are typically used in Java web applications.

As version 1.0 was released in May, the version jump to 1.5 is intended to demonstrate that many new and revised features have been added to the Tomcat package. The developers specifically highlight the extended support for database connection pools which, they say, offers new alternatives for applications under heavy load to deal with increased traffic. The JMX (Java Management Extensions) instrumentation and statistics can be used with all pools, providing monitoring and management.

The new JAX-RS distribution competes with TomEE+, a distribution that also extends the generic version of TomEE to include further Java EE 6 Full Profile features. An overview of the different Tomcat variants and their individual sets of features can be found on the project's comparison page.

Further information about the new release, including a full list of changes and new features, can be found in the release notes. The Apache 2.0-licensed TomEE 1.5.0 is available from the project's downloads page.
