Firefox 3.1 will spend more time in beta, four weeks more between beta 1 and beta 2, as the developers look to add a range of new features to the next major release of the open source browser. Firefox beta 1 is, according to a report on ZDNet, on schedule for a code freeze on September 30th as planned. Firefox beta 2 is then due around November 4th. The extension on the beta period is to create more time for the implementation of new features such as private browsing and some improvements to the tab management and tab user interface.

The exact list of features is not finalised yet. Addressing the dev-planners mailing list, Mike Shaver, Mozilla's VP of engineering said "Because of the strength of Firefox 3.0, we’re not in a rush to get a product to market, and so we’ve started to look at what we might be able to do with one more "feature cycle". We're still hammering out the details, but we know that there is a core list of features that we'll be looking to land between beta 1 and beta 2."

Whether the extension will affect the final release date of Firefox 3.1 is unknown. The release date has always been a suitably vague end of 2008/early 2009, and this is unchanged by the announcement.
