Moonlight 1.0 has been released by the Mono Project, just in time for the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. Moonlight is the Linux equivalent to Microsoft's Flash challenger, Silverlight and makes it possible, for example, to play WMV files in Linux. Novell has a two-year interoperability agreement with Microsoft to promote projects such as Moonlight and under the terms of this agreement, as well as receiving the specifications for the Microsoft project, also gained access to the multimedia codecs and testing tools. While Moonlight 1.0 is based on Microsoft's Silverlight 1.0, Silverlight 2.0 has already been released.

At least this first release, Moonlight 1.0, should be sufficient to allow Linux users to stream the inaugural speech of the new U.S. President online.

It was announced last Friday that the live broadcast of the Inauguration stream would require Microsoft Silverlight. The Moonlight developers and their Microsoft counterparts, worked hard to finish a Silverlight 1.0 compatible version of the Linux player in time for the 18:00 GMT broadcast of President-Elect Obama's inauguration.
