Moodle 2.0 released

Moodle founder Martin Dougiamas announced on the Moodle forum yesterday that after two and a half years of work Moodle 2.0 is now available to download.

The new features in Moodle 2.0 include easy set-up for Community Hubs (which are directories of available courses), support for external content repositories, portfolio support which allows exporting data to external systems, course completion standards can now be specified and conditional activities can be set to depend on certain criteria, for example by grade reached, or by time or date.

Among the improvements in Moodle 2.0 are a completely rewritten backup and restore framework, support for comments on blog entries, filtering that is no longer restricted to a global setting only, as different filters can be set for different parts of a Moodle web site and file handling that has been much improved.

More information on the changes in version 2.0 is available in the release notes and in the change log. Moodle 2.0 is available to download from the Moodle web site and is licensed under the terms of the GPL2.

With over 1 million registered users Moodle is a very widely used open source framework for developing internet based educational web sites and courses. The name Moodle or, Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, is also accepted as a verb which means – to wander or meander through something in an open minded and creative fashion.
