MeeGo Logo Miguel de Icaza, responsible for Mono development at Novell, has posted a blog entry indicating that open source .NET development environment MonoDevelop will now support development of Meego applications. MeeGo, launched at last week's Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, is a project to merge the Maemo and Moblin mobile Linux platforms.

MeeGo is aimed at high-end mobile computers. In common with Maemo, it uses the Qt GUI and applications for the new platform will also be sold on Nokia's Ovi Store. According to Nokia, by 2011, 20% of all Nokia devices will run the MeeGo platform. The Linux platform is completely open source and is being developed under the Linux Foundation umbrella.

De Icaza's announcement comes as no surprise, as Novell has been placing strong emphasis on development for mobile devices since at least last year, when it presented MonoTouch, an application for developing .NET applications for Apple's iPhone. Another blog entry just last week revealed that the Mono development team are working on a version of Mono for Google's Android mobile operating system, to go by the name of MonoDroid.
