Despite all of the recent discussion about the integration of the Mono framework into the Debian Linux distribution, the Mono developer team has now released version 2.4.2 of the open source .NET development framework. The latest version of Mono is a maintenance release and includes more than 150 bug fixes. It is, however, also the first version to support the ASP.NET MVC framework, which has been available under an open source licence, the Microsoft Public License (MS-PL), since the beginning of April.

Licensing for Mono is a little complicated, the C# compiler is dual-licensed under MIT/X11 and the GPL, the tools are licensed under the GPL, the runtime libraries are licensed under the Library GPLv2 and the class libraries under the Open Source Initiative MIT license.

The implementation of the MVC architecture allows ASP.NET developers to apply a widely used architecture and design pattern to their work. It gives web developers control over HTML and URL structures and opens up new possibilities in the areas of unit testing and test-driven software development.
