The Moblin developers have announced the official release of Moblin v2.0, the Linux based operating system designed for netbooks based on Intel's Atom processors. The downloadable live image for Moblin 2.0 is around 722MB and can be installed from USB stick or CD. There is no compatibility list for the release, but the developers say it has been tested on the Acer AspireOne, ASUS Eee PC 901,1005ha and 1008ha, Dell Mini 9,10 and 10v, the MSI Wind, Toshiba's NB205 and the Samsung NC10.

The announcement also noted the early preview release of Moblin Garage and Moblin Application Installer. Garage provides an online applications catalogue for open source and free software or free proprietary software. The Application Installer uses the Garage catalogue to offer an easy to use route to install Garage applications from within the Moblin user interface.

Finally, the Linux Foundation managed project announced the early previews of Moblin 2.1. This next release of Moblin, announced at Intel's Developer Forum, is due in the fourth quarter of 2009. Enhancements in 2.1 include support for different screen resolutions, better IM, an updated kernel, 3G data and bluetooth support and improved language support. Moblin Garage and Application Installer will also be integrated with Moblin 2.1.
