Miro Video Converter The Miro developers, creators of the Miro Internet TV / podcast downloader and player, have announced the availability of version 2.0 of their open source Miro Video Converter video transcoding utility. This is the first converter to support the new open WebM / VP8 video format that Google introduced last week as part of the WebM Project.

The developers say that, although it is still in its early stages, they believe that WebM "has a ton of potential ahead of it" and it could help to "help us all escape from the traps of closed, patented video formats". Other notable changes in version 2.0 of the video converter application include improved audio and video conversion quality, the ability to send Apple formats directly to iTunes and additional conversion options with support for more devices, such as Apple's latest iPad tablets.

More details about the release can be found in the official release announcement. Miro Video Converter 2.0 is available to download for Windows and Mac OS X only from one of the project's mirrors. Miro Video Converter source code is released under version 3 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv3) and is sponsored by the Participatory Culture Foundation, a non-profit organisation.
