Microsoft has introduced a new tool to help MySQL users migrate their data to Microsoft's equivalent SQL Server database. The SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) for MySQL is available as a Community Technology Preview (CTP), Microsoft's name for what other projects call a beta release. As a member of the SQL Server team reports in their blog, the tool is designed to "dramatically cut the effort, cost, and risk of migrating to SQL Server" by providing automated schemas and data migration from MySQL to SQL Server.

It appears that Microsoft wants to capitalise on the currently uncertain future of MySQL. Primary copyright to the open source database system was acquired by Sun in early 2008. Oracle's acquisition of Sun and therefore the future of MySQL as open source has been the cause of recent European Commission competition concerns.

Microsoft's project is released as version 1.0 and is available to download free of charge. There are two variants, a tool for migrating from MySQL to SQL Server 2005 and a tool for migrating to SQL Server 2008 and SQL Azure. SQL Azure is Microsoft's relational database for cloud computing. Both tools support Windows 7, Vista and XP as well as the Windows Server versions 2008 R2, 2008 and 2003. The assistant works with versions 4. 1, 5. 0 and 5.1 of MySQL. Both tools appear to be closed source applications and require use of a free licence key.
