At the end of last year, Adam Kennedy announced that Microsoft had formed a partnership with Strawberry Perl to improve the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN) by supporting CPAN module developers. Over half a year later following several legal and technical hurdles, the Microsoft Open Source Network CPAN Author Lab has finally opened for general access.

The goal of the project is to provide "every CPAN author with free access to a centrally-hosted virtual machine environment containing every major version of Windows". Initially, seven virtual machines are being provided running Windows XP Professional, Server 2003 (32/64 bit), Server 2008 (32/64 bit), Vista Ultimate and the Windows 7 beta. The virtual machines are being provided by Microsoft in Australia and their hosting company Emantra.

Adam Kennedy who founded the project with Microsoft, is a CPAN administrator and the author of approximately 200 CPAN modules. He is also the creator of Perl on a Stick, a fully executable Perl installation that can run be run from a USB flash drive. His other hobbies include Strawberry Perl, a free open source Perl distribution for Windows.
