Microsoft's server to run in OpenStack cloud
Microsoft has announced that it is working with Cloud.com, providing integration and support for Windows Server R2 Hyper-V to the OpenStack open source software project. Microsoft is contributing "architectural and technological guidelines." The goal is to be able to run Windows and open source programs in parallel on cloud systems.
The OpenStack provides its "Compute" and "Object Storage" products on standard hardware. Compute generates and administers large groups of virtual servers, while Object Storage provides redundant, scalable storage for storage devices up to the petabyte range. While the Object Storage part of the project is apparently ready for production, the Austin release of Compute that has just been published is intended mainly for test purposes.
NASA and Rackspace launched the project, which currently has 37 members, including AMD, Intel, Dell and Cloud.com, in July of this year.
