MSFT Microsoft has announced that StyleCop, its C# code analysis tool, is going open source. The software tool will now be hosted on CodePlex, the company's hosting platform for open source projects. StyleCop is now licensed under the Microsoft Public Licence (Ms-PL), which has been approved as a valid open source license by the Open Source Initiative.

Continuing development will be carried out on CodePlex, and Microsoft will retain some control over the project in as much as it takes responsibility for official builds. The code should be moved to CodePlex within the next week and the next version, version 4.4, will be the first to be made available as open source. It should fully support the new C# 4.0.

StyleCop, which is free to use, can be integrated into Visual Studio or MSBuild projects and, as well as analysing C# code, checks for conformity with style, consistency and programming rules.
