CodePlex Foundation logo Microsoft has created the CodePlex Foundation, which sets out its mission as "Enabling the exchange of code and understanding among software companies and open source communities". According to Microsoft, the non-profit foundation will not focus on specific projects, but aims to close the perceived gap between open source communities and commercial software companies.

Despite the name, the CodePlex Foundation is independent from Microsoft's open source project hosting service CodePlex. Sam Ramji, of Microsoft, will serve as the foundation's interim head. Ramji is leaving Microsoft on September 25th, for personal reasons, but will manage the foundation for at least its first one hundred days, after which a new executive director will be hired and new board members brought in. Ramji says that he will then move "to a similar position at a cloud infrastructure start-up in Silicon Valley". Microsoft have funded the foundation with one million dollars and hopes other sources of funding will be found to increase the foundation's independence.
