MeeGo Logo Intel and Nokia have quietly released the first major update to the open source MeeGo mobile operating system, version 1.1. While an official announcement has yet to be made, MeeGo 1.1 is available in four versions, the Core Software Platform, the Netbook User Experience (UX), MeeGo for In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) and the Handset User Experience, which the developers call a "technology snapshot".

Following an announcement by Nokia N900 Project Lead Harri Hakulinen two weeks ago and Nokia's recent PR 1.3 firmware update for its Linux-based N900 internet tablet and smartphone, users can now install the latest MeeGo release and more "easily" dual-boot the device thanks to the addition of U-Boot support in version 1.1. Other details about what's new in MeeGo 1.1 are to be confirmed as, at the time of this posting, the MeeGo Releases page has yet to be updated with information about the new versions.

It's worth noting that MeeGo 1.1 for the N900 is unsupported by Nokia and is primarily aimed at developers and enthusiasts. Users installing it on their devices are doing so at their own risk.

MeeGo is a Linux-based distribution for mobile devices that is the result of the February decision to merge Intel's Moblin platform and Nokia's Maemo platform under the aegis of the Linux Foundation. Currently, the N900 is the only available Nokia device actually capable of running MeeGo.

Varieties of MeeGo 1.1 for Core, Netbooks and Handsets are available to download from the project's repositories. Images for the N900 are also available and installation instructions are provided. Users running previous versions of MeeGo should receive an update notification to upgrade to the latest release. Alternatively, users can manually check for updates by navigating to Applications -> System Tools -> Update System.

Update (29-10-10):
The MeeGo Releases page has now been updated and includes additional details about each version. According to the official release announcement, which contains a number of screenshots for each version, the latest MeeGo is based on the 2.6.35 Linux kernel and includes X.org Server 1.9.0, Qt Mobility 1.0.2 and Qt 4.7.

A beta release of the MeeGo 1.1 SDK has also been issued and the developers note that a final version will be released "during the coming days" before next month's MeeGo Summit conference taking place in Dublin from the 15th to the 17th of November.
