MedialPortal 1.0, a GPL licensed Media Centre alternative that has been five years in development, has been released for Windows XP, MCE2005 or Vista. The final release has ironed out a number of bugs in the earlier release candidates, but functionally, little has changed.

MediaPortal plays DVDs and records TV programmes via DVB-T, DVB-C, DVB-S and analog TV. It supports TV cards with multiple tuners and uses a electronic programme guide based on the XMLtv project. The application can also play music from hard disk or radio broadcasts via DVB, FM and internet streaming. The developers have also included a photo album function and a weather display, updated from online sources.

The developers are already working on some other patches for versions 1.0.1 and 1.0.2, but are moving much of their attention to MediaPortal 2, which appears to be a major re-engineering project.
