Monty Program has announced that next week's release of MariaDB, version 5.2.10, will include an open source PAM authentication plugin. The company says it has pre-announced this feature because Oracle's MySQL PAM authentication plugin, released in September, would be "incompatible with MariaDB and closed source".

The company also said that a Windows Authentication Plugin is in development and is expected to be released before Christmas in MariaDB 5.2.11. MariaDB 5.5 will include both the new plugins, as well as an open source thread pool implementation, matching Oracle's range of commercial MySQL extensions, when it is released. The company did note, however, that the thread pool will not be in the imminent first release of MariaDB 5.5.
