MariaDB Logo Launched by MySQL creator Michael "Monty" Widenius, the MariaDB MySQL fork has been released for downloading as version 5.2. The open source database is based on MySQL 5.1.51, although MariaDB contains additional functions. The release notes say that all commands, interfaces, libraries, and APIs from MySQL also run in MariaDB so it's a drop in replacement for current installations. No innovations were added following the Release Candidate; instead, the developers concentrated on troubleshooting.

The new version focuses on better thread programming in InnoDB, which reportedly makes the engine faster, and has a plug-in concept for authentication modules; MySQL users now have a similar concept in the second release candidate of MySQL 5.5, which was released this week. One of the three authentication modules in MariaDB allows users registered under UNIX to connect to the database without an additional password query.

The OQGRAPH engine processes graphs in the database without having to switch to a special product for such tasks. An additional engine, SphinxSE, reportedly boosts full text searches beyond the speed of technology used in MySQL and the previous MariaDB.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes and in the change log. MariaDB 5.2.3 is available to download from the project's site. MariaDB is licensed under version 2 of the GNU General Public Licence (GPLv2).
