MariaDB 1.4 nearing completion
MySQL founder Monty Widenius has released a beta version of his fork of MySQL, MariaDB. MariaDB 5.1.38 beta is available for download as ready compiled binaries for 32 and 64-bit Linux and as source code. The developers say the Beta is already at release candidate (RC) quality, but they have decided to release it as beta for user testing, to be followed in a few weeks by an RC release. They are planning a final release shortly after the RC. MariaDB is released under version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv2).
