MapServer 6.0 adds OpenGL rendering support
The MapServer team has released version 6.0 of its open source platform for publishing spatial data and interactive mapping applications to the web. According to the developers, the latest release "introduces important changes in key components of the MapServer core" and includes numerous new features and enhancements.
MapServer 6.0 features support for OpenGL rendering and outputting Keyhole Markup Language (KML), Google's XML notation used by Google Earth and Google Maps. Other changes include an overhauled MapServer expression parser, a built-in OpenLayers map viewer and updates to single-pass queries. Improvements have also been made to temporary file handling.

The MapServer project is part of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) and is administered by the MapServer Project Steering Committee. Written in C, the geographic data rendering engine is released under an MIT-style licence.
