As reported by ReadWriteWeb, AOL subsidiary MapQuest has launched a site for US street maps based on OpenStreetMap.

MapQuest already has similar sites for Asia and Europe and is enthusiastic about bringing the advantages of the community-driven mapping project to the US; these are said to include daily updates on driving directions, continual map updates and support for over twelve languages.

MapQuest states "By using crowdsourced OSM data, Open.MapQuest.com is a 'living map,' improved by contributors who can easily add content and details that make the map more specific and useful. Examples include detailed tourist attractions, biking and hiking trails, or even a simple feature such as footpaths through neighbourhood parks."

The OpenStreetMap project was started in July 2004 by Steve Coast – who has since joined the Bing Maps team at Microsoft – and by September 2010 had grown to over 300,000 members.

In August, Bing Maps added an OpenStreetMap layer. MapQuest had already announced its intention to use more open source map data back in July and at the time said its US maps would be expanded through Patch, another AOL subsidiary.
