Mandriva The Mandriva developers have announced the beta release of Mandriva Linux 2010. This third development release includes several bug fixes and updates to the included components. Mandriva Linux 2010 is aimed at improving the user experience for daily tasks.

According to the release announcement, the 2010.0 beta release is based on the 2.6.31 RC6 Linux kernel and features updates to the major desktop components, including the stable release of KDE 4.3 and the latest 2.27.5 development release of GNOME. The beta features a completely rewritten network profiles management (netprofile) tool. Additionally, the developers note that the beta should only be used as a clean installation and that the final graphical design is still not available.

Like Fedora, the Mandriva Developers have chosen to use Plymouth, replacing Splashy, to manage the boot splash (a graphical boot animation while the boot processes happen in the background). The change has been made because Plymouth includes Kernel Mode-Setting support, uses a simple script language and because it's "much more customisable than Splashy".

More details about the release can be found in the release notes. Mandriva Linux 2010.0 Beta is available to download as a 32 or 64-bit DVD image file. According to current development planning, two release candidates will be made available before the final version is released on the 3rd of November, 2009. Mandriva Linux is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
