Mandriva Logo Following several delays, French Linux distributor Mandriva has issued the final version of Mandriva Linux 2010 Spring (2010.1) code-named "Farman". According to the developers, the 2010.1 release is "designed to meet users' real needs" and starts even faster than before. The latest stable version of Mandriva includes a number of updated components and new features over the previous 2010.0 release from November of last year.

Mandriva Linux 2010 Spring is based on the 2.6.33 Linux kernel and features the GNOME 2.30.1 and KDE 4.4.3 (KDE SC 4.4.5 is the latest release) desktops. Package updates include Firefox 3.6.6, X.org Server 1.7.7, VirtualBox 3.1.8, and the Go-OO branch of the OpenOffice office suite. Systems running the GNOME desktop now use Empathy as the default instant messaging client, replacing Pidgin.

The distribution also features several educational and scientific applications, including Axiom for scientific computing, the Jmol tool for visualising molecules and Salome, a generic platform for pre and post-processing for numerical simulation. Other changes and improvements include better hardware support for 3G USB modems and updates to the company's Smart Desktop technology aimed at helping users to organise their data.

More details about the release can be found in the official press release and on the Mandriva Linux 2010 Spring overview page. At the time of this writing, the Mandriva Releases wiki and release notes still show the details for non-final, development version of Mandriva Linux 2010.1.

Mandriva Linux 2010 Spring is available to download in three different versions – the commercial Powerpack edition, the One live system and Free open source edition – as a DVD image file for 32 or 64-bit systems. Mandriva is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
