The Mandriva developers have announced the availability of the second release candidate (RC2) of Mandriva Linux 2009.1. Major updates to the desktop components in the RC2 release include KDE 4.2.2, GNOME 2.26 and X.Org Server 1.6. The release uses the 2.6.29 Linux kernel and includes a tool that allows users to put a hybrid ISO onto a USB drive to install Madriva Linux on netbooks. The developers are currently working on a graphical user interface (GUI) for the tool to make it easier to use that should be introduced in the "coming days."

The release is available as a DVD image for 32 and 64-bit systems, as well as an installable Live CD (only for x86 32-bit systems) running KDE or GNOME. An dual install CD that includes both the 32 and 64-bit versions is also available. Known problems can be found in the frequently updated errata. Feedback from developers is welcome via Bugzilla or through the Mandriva forums.

More details about the second release candidate can be found in the release notes. The final version is scheduled to be released on the 29th of April.
