Management problems at CentOS resolved

Following last Thursday's open letter from a number of core CentOS developers to, recently inactive, project co-founder Lance Davis, requesting clarification of a number of points of contention, Davis has now been in touch with the letter's signatories. According to a short report posted on the top right of the CentOS homepage yesterday, the majority of the problems addressed in the letter have been swiftly resolved. Deadlines for resolving the remaining, issues have also been agreed.

The project now has access for administering domain data and owns all rights to the trademarks, materials and artwork in the CentOS distribution. The problem of access to the Google AdSense and PayPal accounts is not mentioned, but it's promised that further information will be forthcoming. As this and previous postings have been keen to emphasise, the dispute should not have any effect on CentOS users.

The future of the CentOS project, known for its free recompiled versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), now looks assured. This could have the effect of giving the project renewed impetus and attracting new developers. It looks as though it needs it too – where previous CentOS versions were generally released around four to six weeks after the RHEL versions on which they were based, recent versions have taken a little longer. Users are still waiting for CentOS 4.8, even though Red Hat released RHEL version 4.8 in mid May.
