MacPorts 1.8.0 for Snow Leopards

The developers of the MacPorts collection of over 6,000 easy to install open source applications for Mac OS X have released version 1.8.0. This release supports Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6, while requiring at least Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or later. The developers have also made the CPU architecture used when building MacPorts code configurable.

Other improvements in MacPorts include improved search and upgrade commands, the use of the operating systems proxy settings (can be overridden in macports.conf) and the option for MacPorts to drop root privileges when not needed. Other changes are detailed in the release notes.
