Pidgin and Adium users found themselves disconnected from the Microsoft MSN Messenger instant messaging system today. The Adium developers have posted a blog entry explaining that clients that log in using version 15 of the MSN protocol are being rejected. Analysis with a debug version of Adium has revealed that the MSN servers are failing to find a required certificate when the client attempts to retrieve the MSN address book. The problem appears to affect instant messaging applications which use the latest version of libpurple.

The Adium developers are unsure if this is a temporary server problem or a permanent change. If the latter, the developers promise to update the client as soon as possible in their next beta. Adium users are recommended to use the official MSN Messenger for Mac or the 1.3.1 version of Adium (link initiates a download of a DMG file) which is still able to connect. At the time of writing this news item, the Pidgin support pages were overloaded.

Update - The problem resolved itself according to the Adium developers and is believed to have been a server side issue which Microsoft fixed.
