MIPS port of Android open sourced

MIPS Technologies has released the source code of its port of the Google Android operating system to the 32 bit MIPS architecture. MIPS based chips are found in many consumer devices including set-top boxes and media players, as well as in network infrastructure. Art Swift, Vice President of Marketing at MIPS Technologies said "Android presents a compelling value proposition in bringing Internet connectivity and a broad range of applications to MIPS-based digital home devices".

There are now two ports of Android to the MIPS architecture; in April, Embedded Alley, announced their own port of Android, created by incorporating Android specific patches to their MIPS port of the Linux 2.6.28 kernel and then porting the Dalvik virtual machine and associated tools. Mentor Graphics acquired Embedded Alley at the end of July and are combining their Nucleus RTOS with Embedded Alley's Linux and Android based products.

Details of the MIPS Technologies port of Android are available from the MIPS website and a mipsandroid.org site has been set up to distribute the source code and documentation.
