A major release doesn't necessarily have to add new functionality, a fact demonstrated by the Apache project's open source search engine Lucene. The developers have designated version 3 as a "clean up release".

It removes all previously deprecated features, so users updating from earlier versions will need to first remove the code marked as 'deprecated' by the compiler. Lucene now requires at least Java 5, as it uses the enumerationen and autoboxing arguments.

However, the new release is not all clean-up. The change log and contrib change log list six new functions, including an AttributeFactory function that creates a Token instance for all basic attributes.
