Lucene logo The developers of the high performance and open source full text search engine Lucene have announced the availability of Lucene 2.9. The new version offers a number of new features including per segment searching and caching to improve performance, "near real-time" search capabilities, new query types with more scalable multi-term queries, new analysers for Persian, Arabic and Chinese and high performance handling of numeric fields. There is also improved Unicode support and a new query parser framework.

The developers do note that while they attempt to maintain full backwards compatibility, 2.9 includes a number of changes which break that compatibility; users are directed to the change log where the opening section deals with the areas where changes affecting compatibility are listed.

The new release is available to download and is licensed under the Apache 2.0 Licence. The next version will be Lucene 3.0 and will be the first Lucene version to move to Java 1.5 as a requirement, leaving behind Java 1.4.
